Overview of Co-Curricular programmes: Enhancing Academic Achievement
- Teachers and management in Davis College are extremely aware of the value of extra-curricular activities in the lives of students.
- As well as contributing significantly to the personal, social, emotional and physical development of students, such activities are a valuable means of enhancing the learning taking place in the classroom.
- They also offer students a glimpse of different careers or third level options that might interest them and motivate them to pursue their studies diligently.
The college facilitates a variety of such activities and projects which complement many subjects. The following is a limited selection of such activities:
- BT Young Scientist Competition: Davis College has a distinguished record in this competition and regularly enters numerous projects, giving students valuable experience relating to the study of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
- Rotary Youth Leadership: Davis College encourages students to compete in the Rotary Youth Leadership competition. Aoife Murphy, who achieved 590 points in her Leaving Certificate examinations in 2008 and was awarded the Donogh O'Malley scholarship, enjoyed great national success in this competition and represented Ireland at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
- Drama: As well as producing an annual drama performance, Davis College enters drama competitions and acting workshops. This work is very useful for students of drama in English and modern languages. The college is currently working on a production of Charles Dickens' timeless classic "A Christmas Carol".
- Young Enterprise: The Transition Year Programme in Davis College has enjoyed much success in this project, which also prepares students for Business Studies at Leaving Certificate level.
- Cork Schools History Project: Davis College has also enjoyed success in this history competition, with numerous students winning awards at individual and group level.
- Public Speaking and Debating: The College enters a debating team in numerous events, such as Mallow Toast-masters Inter-Schools Competition and the Concern Debates. The college also runs a debating society, which organises an in-house competition. This provides students with invaluable experience in the art of planning and composing essays.
- Field trips: Students attend numerous field trips that relate to their subjects, e.g. theatre performances of plays, debates, research trips to libraries, German and French tours and curriculum-based field trips for different subject!
- School Tours: The College regularly organises trips abroad for students during mid-term breaks. These trips allow students to sample the culture of these countries. A group of students visited Barcelona in 2010, while a trip to England for some Premiership football is a popular annual event.
- Student Council: Students of Davis College elect a representative council that liaises with and advises the Principal on various issues. This council provides students with meaningful opportunities to take responsibility and to show leadership and initiative on matters of concern.
- An Gaisce/ The President's Award: The college is a regular participant in these awards which allow students to set targets and challenges for themselves in appropriate areas, including community issues, and to show the ambition and discipline to achieve them. Many students have enjoyed success in this venture over recent years.
