1. Monitoring Student Attendance

We are obliged by the state to record student attendance on a daily basis.  Returns concerning student absences are now made several times a year to Education Welfare Board, in accordance with the terms of the Education Welfare Act.

The system at our school is devised to make this task an effective and simple operation.  Consequently, the co-operation of all staff members is requested to ensure that this significant task of school organisation is completed accurately.

Subject teachers must know who is in their class at all times

Daily Attendance

  1. Attendance slips are available in every classroom and the main office for all staff to record daily attendance.
  2. Each staff member is requested to call the names of all students who should be in attendance in each class at 9a.m. and again at 3.15p.m. The names of students not present should be entered on the attendance slip and posted up outside the classroom door.
  3. The absence list will then be collected by the Deputy-Principal and returned to the main office where the Roll Books will be filled in by the school secretary.
  4. The list of students absent will be posted on the attendance notice board in the staffroom by 11.00a.m. each morning.
  5. Year heads will then check this list at their earliest convenience to see what students are absent (if parent has already contacted the school this will be noted alongside the students name on the list). If no contact has been made with school from home, year heads will ring parents/guardian to verify absence and request reason for same.

Late Arrivals / Early Departures

  1. Students arriving after class has commenced, or who have occasion to leave the school building during the school day, must sign in or out with the deputy principal.
  2. Students must provide a written explanation. When entering or leaving a class, the explanation should be shown to the subject teacher and given to the class teacher at the Tuesday pastoral care class.
  3. Students are expressly forbidden from leaving school during the school day without the advance permission of the Principal, deputy-principal or a year head.
  4. The record of students who arrive late or leave early is maintained by the deputy principal.

Monitoring Regular Absenteeism

  1. Year Heads will send a standardised letter home to inform Parent/Guardian of absences of more than 10 days and again approaching 20 days of absence.  Parents/Guardians will be invited into the school to discuss their son/daughters absenteeism by class teacher/year head.
  2. In the event of no contact being made by the Parent/Guardian, the Home School Liaison Officer will call out to students home.  Parents will be reminded of their obligations under the Education Welfare Act and that the Education Welfare Officer will be notified of students missing more that 20 days of school.
