Annual Awards 2019
Davis College annual awards took place on Friday October 25th. The awards are an important event in the school calendar as they are an opportunity to recognise the many achievements of our students over the past year.
The proceedings began with a performance from the Senior school choir after which Principal, Stephen Gilbert spoke about the guest speaker Cork Hurler Aidan Walsh and pointed out to students that Aidan was an excellent role model for them. He had talents and he embraced those talents, worked hard and now performs at the highest level in his chosen sports. Everyday Aidan goes out on the pitch he aspires to be the best he can be. The Principal challenged students to do the same, embrace their talents, work at them and strive to be the best they can be each day. The Principal also acknowledged the excellent quality of teaching in the school and the vast array of opportunities offered to students. There would be few awards if teachers had not gone the extra mile to provide these opportunities to students.
Chairperson of the Board of Management, Noel O’Connor addressed the ceremony and encouraged students to support one another, to offer help and assistance to each other and be willing to accept those offers of help. The Student Council Chairpersons also addressed the students and reiterated the importance of student voice in the life of the school.
Guest speaker Aidan Walsh spoke to the students before presenting awards. Aidan spoke with great honesty and authenticity and captivated his audience as a result. He reiterated what the Principal had said and encouraged students to do more so they can reach the next level be that academically or in a sporting context. He also warned against being afraid of moving outside their comfort zone. This was couched in a lovely philosophy that struck a chord with many in attendance– it is not about winning or losing but about winning or learning. Every time you lose or don’t do well you learn and this makes you stronger and you should try harder to succeed the next time.
Before leaving students were treated to a final performance, this time from the Junior School Choir.
